DC EVENT - Racial Equity and Implications for Capacity Building Practice: A Deeper Dive

Co-sponsored by The Alliance and Brighter Strategies, this one day gathering will focus on: increasing engagement of capacity builders in racial equity work in their focused areas of practice and influence; creating a shared understanding and language around concepts and terms related to diversity; introduce and explore the concept of capacity builders as social change agents for racial equity; and increase knowledge of practice tools and intervention strategies.

Keynote Speaker

Brigette Rouson, co-founder of the Insight-Incite consulting collective that is part of the RoadMap network, brings over 25 years’ experience building nonprofit effectiveness toward a just society. She serves on RoadMap’s Operations Team and Racial Justice Action Team. She has designed and led numerous capacity-building initiatives. Former roles include Program Director of Alliance for Nonprofit Management, consultant on staff with Management Assistance Group, Mosaica, and Maryland Nonprofits. Previously as a senior program officer at Ms. Foundation for Women she directed a $4 million girls/young women’s leadership initiative. Earlier, she was legal and regulatory affairs director for a national media association, and a journalist covering Capitol Hill. Brigette is part of communities of practice such as The Art of Transformational Consulting (drawing on Rockwood), Standards for Excellence Licensed Consultants, Gestalt Center for Organization Systems Development, and Shannon Leadership Institute. Community work includes co-founder of a social justice grassroots grantmaker, the Diverse City Fund; resource organizer and member of community organizing groups; and elected member of her congregation’s Board of Social Action. Brigette is a graduate of Howard University (B.A.), Georgetown (J.D.), and University of Pennsylvania (M.A.) where she completed all coursework toward a Ph.D. She is a member of the DC Bar since 1983. 


Speaker Bios

George A. Jones - Chief Executive Officer, Bread for the City

George A. Jones has been Chief Executive Officer of Bread for the City (BFC) since January 2, 1996. He is responsible for managing all administrative, financial, and programmatic aspects of the organization and its 100 full time staff. Mr. Jones has led Bread for the City’s growth from a $1.2 million operation in 1996 to a $11.5 million operation in 2019. This growth included overseeing the development of a community center in Southeast DC in 2002,  the 11,000 sq. ft. expansion of BFC’s Northwest Center, which was completed in December 2010, and the current development of a new 27,000 sq. ft. Center on Good Hope Road, in Southeast DC.

Under Mr. Jones' leadership, Bread for the City has taken on the challenge of attacking poverty through a racial equity lens. The agency is committed to embedding racial equity in all of is direct services and efforts to organize around and advocate for affordable housing for DC residents living on low incomes. Bread for the City strives to be an anti racist agency and one that helps to lead the movement of creating a racially equitable City. 

Susie Lee - Executive Director, Potomac Health Foundation

Susie Lee is the Executive Director of Potomac Health Foundation. She reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the overall management of the Foundation, including for areas of strategic planning, financial management, and grant programs. She has worked in public health for over two decades at the local, national, and international levels for organizations such as the Children’s Defense Fund, Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs, Public Health Solutions in New York City, and Gavi – the Vaccine Alliance. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Public Health from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.

Whitney Parnell - CEO/Founder, Service Never Sleeps

Whitney Parnell is a Black millennial activist, singer, and the Founder and CEO of Service Never Sleeps (SNS), a nonprofit that empowers individuals and communities to catalyze social justice through service and Allyship. She grew up between Latin America and West Africa as a Foreign Service child. At Washington University in St. Louis, Whitney doubled majored in English and Spanish, and minored in Communications and Journalism, during which she also embraced her calling as an activist. Whitney’s passion for service and social justice brought her to Washington, DC to serve with City Year, and then work in homeless services. Whitney is excited to create a movement of service and allies by igniting quick social change through mass civic engagement. Whitney is also a musician, and is releasing a social justice album called "What Will You Do," with the goal of using empathy through song to ignite action. All album proceeds will go to Service Never Sleeps. 

Henry Posko - CEO, Humanim

Henry Posko has been a social entrepreneur for over 35 years as CEO of Humanim. Serving 4000 individuals annually, Humanim’s core mission is to support and economically empower individuals with disabilities and socio-economic challenges. The organization was founded on the belief that every human being has potential and that work is transformative, with the goal of creating economic equity.

Dr. Renee L. RomanDepartment Chair, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology

Dr. Roman is currently a full time faculty member and Department Chair for both Masters and Doctoral level students in the Business Psychology Department at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington, D.C. In this role she has supervisory and academic programmatic responsibility for three Masters and PhD level programs (Industrial Organization Psychology, Business Psychology and Organization Leadership) where she mentors, instructs and facilitates students striving to achieve their higher education goals.

Prior to her federal retirement in Nov 2017, Dr Roman, served as the Chief of Staff for the Defense Logistics Agency, where she was the senior leader responsible for the Agency’s Diversity and Inclusion organization, policies and practices covering over 27,000 employees. Dr. Roman has also served as at the Deputy Associate Director in the Office of Personnel Management’s Human Resources Services and as a senior internal consultant on numerous organization interventions focused on building high performing inclusive organizations. 

Glenn E. Schneider - Chief Program Officer, Horizon Foundation

Glenn is a passionate, strategic and skilled public health leader with extensive experience managing successful campaigns that improve lives. At the Horizon Foundation, Glenn leads a talented program team that oversees diverse community initiatives such as Howard County Unsweetened, Sugar Free Kids Maryland, Speak(easy) Howard, Open Streets, Let's Rethink Lunch, and the Foundation’s Equity and mental health portfolios just to name a few.

Kerrien Suarez - Director, Equity in the Center

Kerrien is director of Equity in the Center, an initiative of ProInspire. Equity in the Center (EiC) addresses a gap in philanthropic and nonprofit organizations’ DEI practice: The absence of cross-functional organizational development and change management practices that measurably shift mindsets, tactics, and systems toward race equity. In 2018, EiC published, Awake to Woke to Work: Building a Race Equity Culture, which outlines a set of management and operational tactics organizations can leverage to center race equity in management, policy, culture and practice.

Terri D. Wright, PhD, MPH - Vice President Programs and Community, Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation

Dr. Wright joined the Foundation in February 2018 to oversee its programming and community engagement strategies intended to disrupt the systems that perpetuate racial inequities throughout the region. She’s responsible for the implementation and integration of the Foundation’s key strategies of grantmaking, capacity building, collective action and advocacy.

Dr. Wright has employed her extensivleadershiskillanexpertisadvancinequity and the public’s health througpolicypracticeanmanagement in local and national governmentphilanthropiannon-profiorganizations throughout her career. Most recently, she was the first executive director of The Steve Fund, charged with advancing the mental health and emotional well-being of college and university students of color.
